Zooming along the road to recovery

We’re delighted to be working with Bedford Recovery Centre, which provides courses and workshops which focus on mental health wellbeing and recovery and are delivered by people with lived experience and professional experience. Food etc is providing practical ideas and cookalongs for preparing and eating healthy meals on a budget over Zoom.

The first week looked at ways of using tinned food that either people already had in their cupboards or had seen in shops and didn’t know how to use. Using just a humble onion and a tin of tomatoes and adding a couple more tins of vegetables and pulses we came up with lots of ideas for all sorts of meals.

The second week explored ways of having healthier and cheaper alternatives to takeaways and focussed on meat and veggie burgers with homemade oven chips.

A Recovery College student said “ It tasted really nice. I liked the chips and I think I’ll do them in the oven from now on rather than the deep fat fryer. It was easy to do. I’ll definitely be making this dish again.”

Bedford & Luton Recovery Centre manager Tony Isles said: “I am getting some great ideas from Food etc about different ways to cook foods I use all of the time as well as to try new ones.”
