Microwave Mug Cake

Serves 1 – 2

  • 4 tbsp self-raising flour
  • 4 tbsp caster sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 medium egg
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil or sunflower oil
  • A few drops of vanilla essence or other essence (orange or peppermint work well)
  • 2 tbsp chocolate chips, nuts, or raisins etc (optional)


  1. Put the flour, sugar and cocoa powder in a large mug and mix it together


  1. Add the egg and mix until you can’t see the dry ingredients


  1. Add the milk, oil and essence and mix until smooth


  1. Add the chocolate, nuts, or raisins if you are using them and mix again


  1. Put your mug on the middle of the microwave oven plate and cook on high for 1½ -2 mins, or until the sponge has stopped rising and is firm to the touch


  1. Serve on its own or with custard or ice cream
